Director of the NCI SBIR Development Center Describes Funding Opportunities - This Friday

NCI’s Director of the SBIR Development Center, Michael Weingarten, will be at UCSF this Friday to describe the SBIR and STTR programs, funding opportunities, policy changes that will make venture backed companies eligible and tips for writing a strong application. Michael will be available for 20 minute one on one meetings after his formal session. StartX Med Innovation Challenge is a 50 hour weekend event offering hands-on education in healthcare entrepreneurship through talented, multi-disciplinary teams. During this weekend, participants will pitch ideas, form teams, develop product ideas and business plans, create prototypes, and present a final pitch to a panel of judges. All teams will receive advising and feedback on their ideas from industry leaders, expand their networks, and potentially find co-founders for their startups. Winners from the Innovation challenge will become finalists for StartX Med, a nonprofit startup accelerator, and receive special mentor-ship from StartX Med and Stanford Hospital.

Want to learn how startups and hackers in their garages and basements are using cloud based services and low cost labs, tools, and equipment to manipulate organisms to produce materials and products of economic value.

Startups like Lygos are altering the DNA of yeast and e-coli to produce nylon, polyester, and polypropylene for clothing. RefactoredMaterials is transforming proteins to create materials that mimic spider silk. All of this is possible because cloud-based services and low cost tools are enabling these companies to quickly and cheaply build and iterate through multiple DNA blueprints to discover the right formula to produce these materials.

QB3 Bridging-the-Gap Award Deadline Approaching

Application Deadline: Friday, October 19th, 2012

Awards are for $100,000 per year, and will begin in early 2013. An additional $25,000 award will be made to groups who achieve their proposed goals within the year. A second year of funding is available based on progress. Apply here.

The committee looks for projects that are at a stage where early proof-of-concept experiments funded by the award will assist the group in lowering the technical risk for a given technology. It is hoped that these groups could form a startup company within a 1-3 year period. The applications that best fit the goals of this award will be selected by a QB3 committee, and these finalists will give an oral presentation to the Awards Committee, who will make a final decision.
